The Training and Placement Cell of IIS (Deemed to be University), Jaipur in collaboration with Barclays Lifeskills Programme organized a 4-day pre-placement program from 20th December 2021 to 23rd December 2021. The program was commenced by the speakers giving very generous time to all the students to introduce themselves along with their goals and their queries in achieving the same. The queries were very thoroughly answered and the speakers put sincere efforts into making everyone comfortable and open up well. The first day of the workshop was highly interactive and everyone learned a lot of what career options one can choose and follow through.
The second day of the program started with activity regarding goal setting which comprised of questions like Interests? Why? Efforts made towards them? Consistency? and Purpose/Intent? We were all requested to answer these questions one by one. The program was further was continued with an introduction about interpersonal skills and their major role in the placement world. We were even advised to “Be a critic to yourself”, to set short and long-term (realistic) goals.
We were introduced to communication skills, listening skills, and communication barriers. The different types of communication – written, verbal and non – verbal communication. We learned about the different barriers to communication such as linguistic, psychological, cultural, physical, and geographical barriers, and how to overcome these. There was a YouTube lesson to explain the barriers well and their prevention or treatment at the workplace. We were made known of the most used form of written communication “Emails” as they are the only form of communication that can be presented as written legal proof in front of the court.
Next, we learned about Email Etiquettes. We made a list of things to remember like the font size, email word limitations, font to be used, format of the email, salutations, mail hours, number of paragraphs that can be used, etc. We were made familiar with how formal mail is written and things to avoid while using this mode of communication such as sending emails after office hours, using caps lock, use of informal language, or jargon. We were even assigned to write a formal mail to one of the speakers for practice and homework.
The third day started with personal branding and the growing need for it in today’s world. We learned the basics of personal branding like image building, informative statements, weakness vs. victorious, thought vs. action, words and impressions, facts, and provisioning. These basics were systematically explained and we were given details about the branding phenomenon. A lot of activities were conducted related to personal branding.
India’s biggest government branding was discussed and his history was shared. Some of the shared ones were “Give me blood, I’ll give you freedom”, “Jai Javan, Jai Kisan, Jai Vigan”, “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao”, “Swaach Bharat” etc.
The fourth and the last day of the program was the most important one. We learned about POSH – the Prevention of sexual harassment at the workplace. Questions like what is sexual harassment, what all is considered under the same, what all places will be covered under POSH such as official parties, office vehicles, online meetings/ calls, office gyms and recreational areas, office cafeteria and lunch premises, etc. The history of POSH ACT (2013) was discussed, how it started with the case of Bhanwari Devi (1989). It’s a journey from Vishaka Guidelines to POSH ACT. We were introduced to the different types of sexual harassment and the types of committees – The internal complaint committee (ITC) and Local complaint committee (LCC). Their roles in the prevention of any act of sexual harassment and how one can access these committees in need. We were given case studies to identify any kind of sexual harassment and what we can do in case we have or will go through such a situation.
